Meet the Founder
Julie Speier, Founder and Director of SPEIER Courses, discovered her passion for education as a high school student. Julie earned a full scholarship for swimming to Boston University and served as the team captain for two years. She spent her summers working as a camp counselor, lifeguard and swim coach. After graduating from Boston University, Julie was ready for a new adventure. She moved to Hawaii where she worked as a teacher and waitress and spent her free time surfing. She then relocated back to Ohio, where she taught and coached swimming at Cincinnati Country Day School for seven years.
Julie’s adventurous spirit took her to New York City next where she met her husband John, Their mutual love of adventure and giving back took them to Nicaragua. When they found out they were expecting their first child, they decided to trade in the city life for a surfing lifestyle in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. They immediately embraced the culture of humility and hard work. Julie’s passion for lifelong learning and improvement inspired her and John to start a school. In early 2009, they opened the doors for 8 students which became what is now San Juan del Sur Day School. Julie led the school in its growth and development for 14 years, achieving national recognition and international school accreditation.
Seeking more opportunities for personal growth and opportunities to combine her love of the water and education, Julie launched SPEIER courses in 2023.
